Carmignac Photojournalism Award: Lizzie Sadin at Saatchi Gallery

Next month from 15 May to 15 June, Saatchi Gallery will showcase the work of Lizzie Sadin, the 8th Carmignac Photojournalism Award laureate, in her exhibition entitled ‘The Trap’.

After the 2015 Napalese earthquake which killed 9000 and left 650,000 displaced, the country fell into a state of despair and saw unemployment rise and an increase in trafficking, mostly of women. Whilst in Nepal, photographer Lizzie Sadin explored this trafficking of women and forced prostitution which was not only as a result of the economic poverty but also the existing social and cultural practices.

Women in Nepal are currently defined as inferior to and dependent on men. The exhibition will show photographs of just a handful of the women that Sadin met whose fundamental rights were violated on a daily basis and will highlight how the underlying social values need evolving in order for human rights violations to stop.

This series of photographs is a truly moving display which will encourage you to reflect on society and gender expectations globally – a must see exhibition.
